Students are some of the most intuitive people on the planet. Thriving to make themselves known in the world, students leverage ideas to make money, set up new businesses, showing off their portfolio online, etc. There’s one thing in common; most of these ideas require a website. Bluehost is not only a reliable and well-known web hosting provider, they are the best overall student web hosting provider. In our Bluehost review, you’ll see that Bluehost has consistently offered a stable and 100% uptime score. This tells us that they are reliable, high-performing, and they do what they say they’re going to.

Bluehost is one of the recommended WordPress web hosting providers. So not only do you have a great web host, you have one that’s recommended by multiple people (including us). From just $3.95 per month, Bluehost offers 50GB SSD storage, unlimited emails and bandwidth, a free SSL certificate, and a free domain name

You get great value for money with Bluehost. No, they’re not the cheapest, but they are by far not the most expensive. We know that students are on a tight budget, but we firmly believe that investing a few dollars per month on your web hosting is worth the extra cents, as opposed to opting for a cheaper hosting alternative.

You’ve undoubtedly seen the infamous HostGator alligator. HostGator are well known in the hosting industry, for good reason. Yes, they’ve been around for a long time, but they deserve their spot in this competitive market. They offer one of the highest uptime guarantees a student web host offers, offering a wide variety of hosting types like shared hosting, VPS hosting, and dedicated hosting.

When you sign up to HostGator for just $2.75 per month, you’ll get a free SSL certificate to protect your website, free domain name, unmetered storage and bandwidth, unlimited emails, and one-click installs for platforms like WordPress.

Aside from the standard features you’d expect from a student web host (remember, budget is a priority here), HostGator boasts excellent features like access to cPanel, unlimited subdomains, and FTP accounts, 24/7/365 support, and lots more.

3. SiteGround (Best for Reliability)

SiteGround is the most expensive student web hosting, however, there’s a reason they cost more than the others. When it comes to web hosting, it’s about balancing out your options and requirements. While you can opt for a cheap web hosting provider, is it worth sacrificing reliability and performance?

In some cases, it might be, as it entirely depends on the type of website you’re looking to host. If it’s a portfolio website, blog, or personal site, performance is less of an issue in comparison to a business website or online store. With SiteGround’s StartUp plan, you’ll pay $6.99 per month and get 10GB SSD storage, unmetered traffic, free SSL, daily backup, free CDN, free email accounts, managed WordPress, unlimited databases, and a 30-day money-back guarantee.

See what I mean? You get a lot more for your money. In my SiteGround review, you’ll see that SiteGround performs well in most of our tests, including uptime, speed, and performance. However, after the initial term, their prices skyrocket to $14.99 per month, which feels too steep for a student hosting provider in my opinion.

4. AccuWebHosting (Best for Free Student Hosting)

AccuWebHosting offers free hosting for students. In their free student hosting plan you get access to cPanel, 2GB SSD storage, 30GB bandwidth, 5 FTP accounts, 25 free email addresses, 10 MySQL databases, and a North American data center.

The requirements for being eligible for the free student hosting are that you must be a current or incoming student at a well-known university, and you must be able to provide documentation to support enrollment. While those requirements are exactly too taxing, the application process is laborious and would personally put me off wanting to sign up for free hosting.

Once you’ve liked AccuWebHosting on Facebook, recorded a video, and sent in some of your DNA (okay, that part I’m joking about), you can access their free web hosting for students. While it may take some time and effort to sign up, AccuWebHosting does offer free hosting for students, which is a good thing in my opinion. I’m just not sure how good it is to bypass a few dollars per month.

5. iPage (Best for Cheap Web Hosting)

iPage doesn’t offer multiple cheap student hosting plans like many other web hosts. They actually only offer one hosting plan, but their all-in-one plan costs just $1.99 per month and includes unlimited storage, bandwidth, free SSL certificate, free domain, and lots more.

Many people think that because iPage is so cheap, they won’t be very powerful or high-performing servers. While they aren’t a match for the likes of SiteGround, you’ll see from my iPage review that iPage is actually surprisingly good! In fact, in my tests, iPage had 100% uptime and a steady server response time of 222ms during a 24-hour period.

For $1.99 per month, you really can’t go wrong with iPage. You won’t get the best customer support, but if you know what you’re doing and you’re not reliant on your website needing support, iPage’s student web hosting is an absolute steal.

6. InMotion (Best for Student Discount)

InMotion hosting offers a wide choice of hosting plans for every type of hosting. They have shared hosting plans, VPS hosting, reseller hosting, and more. However, they also offer 50% off web hosting for students! That’s right, InMotion has a 50% discount for students, making their $5.99 per month plan just half price.

To be eligible for InMotion’s student discount web hosting, you’ll need to provide your Edu email address. Simply enter it into InMotion’s student hosting page and you’ll get an email within 24 hours to verify your identity. The price of their shared hosting plan will then drop from $5.99 to 50% off.

Once your student discount has been activated, you’ll be eligible for a free domain name, free SSL certificate, 50GB SSD storage, unlimited bandwidth, 10 email addresses, and access to InMotion’s security suite and marketing tools.

Best Free Hosting for Students

We’ve touched a little bit on free hosting by including one of our recommendations for AccuWeb Hosting. However, there are other free web hosting providers that are also suitable for students considering setting up their first web hosting service.

Here are the best free web hosting providers for students:

  1. AccuWeb Hosting
  2. Interserver.net
  3. ZNetLive
Let’s take a quick look at what each host has to offer, and see whether free hosting for students is worth the time and effort in the first place.

AccuWeb Hosting

AccuWeb Hosting was founded back in 2002 and offers affordable web hosting for a large range of users. They also offer free web hosting for students, providing you have enough time to meet the large list of steps you need to complete in order to apply. AccuWeb Hosting offers free web hosting for students until you graduate, giving you plenty of time to save dollars for another exciting venture.

InterServer.net

InterServer.net are well known for their choice of web hosting services. They offer shared hosting, VPS hosting, dedicated hosting, and more. Students get 1 year free of InterServer.net's web hosting which is their Standard Web Hosting package. Included are unlimited storage, bandwidth, websites, and email addresses. When the plan renews, it costs just $5 per month which is a bargain.

ZNetLive

With ZNetLive you'll get a free domain name, free SSL, 5 free email accounts, unlimited data, 500MB storage, and backups. This is a great free student hosting plan, making it a user-friendly option for those who are on a budget. However, there isn't any reassurance that ZNetLive's free student hosting plan will continue. At the moment they offer free web hosting for each year, re-assessed at renewal.

Best Web Hosting for Students: Summary

We’ve looked at the best hosting providers for students; taking us from paying zero dollars to paying $6.99 per month. While price is important to students on a budget, we now know that value for money means more than getting something for free. Here’s a quick reminder of our recommended web hosts for students:

Without a doubt, Bluehost is the best overall student hosting provider. They offer fantastic value for money, balancing the scales between free features, good performance, and affordable pricing. They are also the best-recommended WordPress hosting provider, so bear this in mind for the future.

If you’re looking for a reliable web host that offers a stable website uptime and decent performance, HostGator and SiteGround are the best hosts for the job. However, with SiteGround, prices are definitely on the expensive side, so carefully assess whether you can afford this or not.

AccuWebHosting gets our vote for the best free web hosting for students. But, if you can’t be bothered to go through their annoying process of meeting certain criteria, InMotion offers a 50% discount for students, making their hosting incredibly affordable.
