With the name of SecureVPN, this VPN has a lot to live up to!

But does it? Read on to discover my thoughts on this VPN provider and whether it is a good choice out of all of the options on the market today.

Overview

SecureVPN has only been on the market for a few years now. Because of this, it is not one of the more well-known VPNs out there. However, if you are looking for an affordable VPN, it is certainly worth considering. Not only is there a free plan available, but the premium plan is affordable as well.

One thing I must say is that the server network is very small with SecureVPN. The company only has servers in seven countries, so I hope that they intend to expand in the future, as this is small, especially when you compare with the likes of ExpressVPN and CyberGhost.

The servers do have a good spread in terms of locations, including the likes of India, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Singapore, and the United States. However, this is a very small server network nevertheless.

The company themselves is based in the United States, which really is not great news! This is one of the worst jurisdictions for VPN providers. Why? Well, the United States is a founding member of the Five Eyes surveillance alliance. Other members include New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom. The five countries have basically agreed to share information with one another.

As SecureVPN is based in the United States, they need to comply with information sharing as part of this agreement, and they must comply with any demands made by the federal government. In my opinion, if a VPN provider is located in this part of the world, you can never really have 100 per cent security.

Speeds

Of course, it is natural that your speed is going to slow down a bit when connecting to any VPN. However, you don’t want to slow down too much, right?

Luckily, SecureVPN didn’t falter at the first hurdle! When testing servers in the EU, I experienced a speed drop of around 10 per cent, which isn’t bad at all. The results weren’t as impressive in the United States, but they weren’t bad either. The download speeds were certainly a lot better than the upload speeds, though.

Security

Security is always one of the most essential things to consider when looking for a VPN. One thing that I was overjoyed to see was that there is a built-in kill switch! A kill-switch provides you with a great layer of security, ensuring that you are going to be protected even if your Internet connection drops out. This is especially important for those who are looking for a VPN for torrenting purposes.

Does SecureVPN collect logs?

After browsing the SecureVPN website, I was able to see that the VPN provider stated that it was 100 per cent safe and private irrespective of where you are. Sounds good, but a lot of VPN providers make these sorts of promises. You would assume that they do not collect logs in this case, right? Wrong!

Unfortunately, SecureVPN does collect logs. It is not one of the worst logging policies out there, but it is vital to realise that they do gather some information.

I was able to see that some of the information collected by SecureVPN includes your internal and external IP.

There were also a few things about their security policy that caused me some concern. While the company states they do not log your data, they do say they will give the government your usage data. This is a bit contradictory, and so I would like to see SecureVPN be a bit more upfront and clear about what information they do and do not keep.

Ease Of Use

I was very happy with how easy SecureVPN was to install and use. You don’t have to think twice when it comes to downloading this application. The installation process is straightforward and the app is very easy-to-use. From clicking on the link to download the app to connecting to a server, the whole process only took me a few minutes.

Torrenting

You can torrent with SecureVPN, but only if you choose the premium plan. As the security levels are pretty high with this VPN, it is not a bad choice if you are looking for something for torrenting purposes.

I always recommend making sure that the VPN you choose has a kill switch if you are interested in torrenting, and thankfully VPNSecure ticks this box.

Unblock Streaming Services

I would not recommend SecureVPN if you are interested in unblocking streaming services. I have tested out a few servers, and I have had a little luck in terms of unblocking Netflix in the US. Because of the small server network, I would imagine that you’re going to struggle to unblock most streaming services out there.

It’s a bit of a hit-and-miss in this area really. I have managed to get through to Netflix a couple of times, yet I’ve had more failure than success. There is a section on the SecureVPN dedicated to Netflix issues, so the company really does care about this, but they have a bit of a way to go in my opinion.

Compatibility

This VPN is compatible with all of the major devices and operating systems, i.e. Android, iOS, Windows, and Mac.

However, when it comes to other platforms and devices, SecureVPN is not really a great choice. Plus, there are not many guides available to help if you do not use one of the major platforms.

You can connect five devices to this VPN simultaneously, which is the industry standard.

Games Consoles & Streaming Devices

You probably won’t be surprised to learn that SecureVPN is not a recommended choice for streaming devices and games consoles considering my earlier comments about VPN compatibility.

If you are looking for the best VPN for gaming, some of the choices I would recommend include the likes of NordVPN, Surfshark, and IPVanish.

Browser Extensions

There are not any browser extensions available with SecureVPN. If you would like to find out more about the best VPNs for browser extensions, you can read my thoughts on VPNs for Firefox and Google Chrome.

Customer Support

I was a little bit disappointed to see that SecureVPN only provides email support. When I landed on their website for the first time, it stated that support was available seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Because of this, I assumed that live chat was going to be on offer, yet this was not the case, which is disappointing.

Instead, it is only email support that was available. I found the support to be pretty vague, and there is not much in the way of knowledge guides online. This is definitely one of the areas where I would like to see SecureVPN improve.

If you take a look at the FAQ section, you will see that there are only four questions answered. Hardly comprehensive, right? Interestingly, when you land on the FAQ section, all of a sudden the contact hours for the company changes to “9 am – 5 pm EST, 7 days a week.” So, what is it? 9 until 5, or 24 hours? Your guess is as good as mine!

Pricing

There are two plans available for you if you are interested in SecureVPN. This is a free plan and a paid plan.

As you can imagine, the free plan is very limited, hence why it is free! So, what can you expect with this plan?

You will get security features, VoIP & web access, and unlimited speed. You can only connect one device, though. Plus, there are limits in terms of data transfer and VPN session duration. The former is 1000 mb/month, with the VPN session duration limited to 20 minutes, which can be very frustrating to say the least!

You also do not get full network access, which means you cannot engage in any P2P file sharing.

With the paid plan, you can use the VPN for torrenting. The limits are also removed in terms of data transfer and VPN session duration. Plus, as mentioned earlier, you are going to be able to connect five devices at the same time.

How much is this going to set you back? You can either pay $7.99 per month or $69.99 per year, which you will need to pay upfront in one payment. Despite needing to pay for the year upfront, you will make considerable savings if you decide to go down this route. In total, it is $25.89 that you will save over the course of the 12 months if you opt for the annual plan.

Summary

So there you have it: my thoughts on the SecureVPN app! In my opinion, this is an app that is only really suited to casual browsing. While there are many good features for you to make the most of, there are some evident gaps as well.
