If you are new to the world of web hosting and site creation, you may feel like you don’t know where to begin! There are many companies, offering many services, and it can be difficult to know who to trust. This is especially true when web hosting prices are rockbottom, take GoDaddy pricing for example.
There’s no need to panic, though; that’s why I created this website – to help people in your position.
GoDaddy is one of the most well-known names in the industry, but just because a brand is popular, does it make their practices ethical and safe? Is GoDaddy legit? Why are GoDaddy pricing plans so cheap?
Background information on GoDaddy
GoDaddy provides a wide range of services to help entrepreneurs grow online. This includes domain name registration, website building, and much more.
The company was founded back in 1997 by Bob Parsons, an entrepreneur from Baltimore, Maryland. At the time, Bob was retired after selling Parsons Technology, a financial software services business, to Intuit in 1994 for $65 million. However, three years later, he decided to come out of retirement, launching Jomax Technologies, which ended up becoming the GoDaddy Group Inc.
As of 2020, GoDaddy has more than 7,000 employees around the world and over 20 million customers, so it certainly has a large presence.
Is GoDaddy legit?
A company with 20 million customers has to be doing something right, doesn’t it? In terms of being a legitimate company, you have nothing to worry about here. GoDaddy is publicly-traded, with its headquarters in Scottsdale, Arizona.
GoDaddy has grown significantly over the years, acquiring other businesses along the way, including Cognate, Sucuri, Main Street Hub, and much more.
The company follows the rules and regulations in place regarding data protection and handling, and they are trusted by millions of people. Therefore, I can confirm, GoDaddy is certainly not a scam.
Why do people think GoDaddy is a scam?
Well, people are always sceptical when it comes to choosing a new service provider. Unfortunately, every industry has cowboys who try to take advantage of people to steal their money. Luckily, though, GoDaddy is not one of these businesses!
Another reason why some people may think that GoDaddy is a scam is because of their cheap prices. They enable you to purchase a domain name for ridiculously low rates, with GoDaddy pricing starting from just $0.99. Often, people think that this is too good to be true, and that is why they worry that GoDaddy is not legit.
However, you need to look carefully at the terms and conditions when you purchase a domain name from GoDaddy. While the first year is incredibly cheap, the second year is always significantly more expensive. You need to pay for the first year and the second year together, so often you do not end up making such significant savings.
It’s a clever tactic by GoDaddy to make the hosting seem cheaper than it is! It’s not illegal, of course, and it is not a scam. It is just something you need to be mindful of. Always read the small print when signing up for any service.
The pros and cons of using GoDaddy
As is the case with any company, there are always pros and cons. I am going to talk you through my thoughts regarding the plus points and the drawbacks associated with GoDaddy pricing, as I have used the platform extensively for quite some time now.
Pros of using GoDaddy
There are a number of benefits associated with using GoDaddy. You have a wide range of plants to choose from, and the traffic is not limited when using this host either, which is always good news.
The storage limitation is rather generous as well at 250,000 files. Speed has proven to be good from the tests I have carried out, making GoDaddy one of the better hosts in terms of performance.
I would definitely recommend GoDaddy for beginners in terms of the interface; it is intuitive and very easy-to-use.
Cons of using GoDaddy
There are some areas I would like GoDaddy to improve on, though. As explained earlier, GoDaddy is not as cheap as it first appears, so I certainly think that this host can deliver better value for money. This is especially the case when you consider there are add-ons that can be purchased as well.
The restoration fees are a bit disappointing as well. A lot of the hosting and website building companies I have used will restore your website at no cost to you. However, GoDaddy charges a fee for this, and in some cases, it can be as much as $300. To combat this, I would highly recommend that you are diligent and make regular backups of your website.
Has GoDaddy been involved in any controversies?
While GoDaddy is a legitimate company with a great reputation, they have had a few controversies over the years. One of the most recent was a data breach that happened on the 19th of October in 2019. GoDaddy encountered a security breach that impacted the hosting accounts of 28,000 customers. The breach was on the system for six months prior to being detected by the security team at GoDaddy on the 23rd of April in 2020.
So, how did the data breach at GoDaddy happen? Well, an altered SSH file was used to target customer’s hosting information, which led to the passwords and usernames of the accounts involved being compromised.
Final words: Is GoDaddy Pricing legit?
GoDaddy is certainly a legitimate company, and they offer a wide range of web hosting and domain services that you may find useful. A lot of people also use GoDaddy to create their website. I’ve compared GoDaddy to a few other hosting providers, so it is worth checking out these reviews to help you determine whether GoDaddy pricing plans are right for you or a different host would be better.
