Are you wondering how to change your Netflix region in 2022?

There’s nothing worse than sitting down to watch a TV show on Netflix, only to realize that it is not available in your region.

You search through all of the TV shows, try different variations of the name, and then you start doing some digging online, only to discover that it is restricted to certain locations only.

For example, some shows that are only available on the US version include Mystic Pizza, 30 Rock, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Radium Girls, Rain Man, and Under Siege.

Some UK exclusives on Netflix include American Graffiti, Back to Life, The Blair Witch Project, and all of the Bourne movies.

It’s the same sort of story in plenty of other locations around the world. For example, those in France are able to watch the likes of Cube, The 400 Blows, A Judgment in Stone, and Merci Pour Le Chocolat.

Don’t worry, though; I am not saying all of this to these you about the shows you cannot watch. You can actually change your Netflix region so that you can gain access to TV libraries from around the world, no matter where you are based right now.

Below, I will explain exactly how to change your Netflix region so you can get a better understanding.

How do you find the best VPN for Netflix?

There are lots of great VPNs but you need to choose one that is going to be suitable for Netflix. There are a number of different factors I would recommend considering when doing this, including the following:

Netflix-compatible servers

There is only one place to begin, and this is by making sure that the VPN you select has plenty of servers that are Netflix-compatible. The likes of NordVPN and ExpressVPN lead the way when it comes to this.

Security

When you are looking for a VPN, security always needs to be one of the main elements that you consider. Make sure that the VPN you select uses 256-bit AES encryption at a minimum. I also recommend that you choose a VPN that has a kill switch and DNS leak protection.

Speed

At the minimum, you are going to need a 25 Mbps connection speed if you want to stream in 4K. You will also need to choose a package that offers unlimited bandwidth as well.

Global network

As you want to access Netflix libraries in different locations, you need to make sure that the VPN provider you choose has coverage in these locations. Some VPNs are very limited, and they only have servers in a few countries around the world. VPNs like this won’t be of much use when you are looking for one to use with Netflix.

So these are the four main factors to consider when you are looking for a VPN for Netflix, in particular. Of course, do not forget about the other standard elements, such as value for money, ease of use, and privacy.

#1 | NordVPN

There really is only one place to begin when it comes to choosing a VPN to change your Netflix region, and this is with NordVPN.

NordVPN

I have used NordVPN for Netflix for many years now, and I have never had any trouble when using it. With over 5,100 servers across all corners of the world, you have all of the availability you need in terms of changing your server so that you can access the Netflix library of your choice.

NordVPN provides lightning-fast speeds, meaning that you can enjoy both HD and 4K content without any buffering or lagging. Plus, you won’t have to worry about any bandwidth limits or data caps, meaning you can stream Netflix for as long as you like.

Plus, you can use your NordVPN on any device. Yes, this even includes devices that do not support VPNs, such as some game consoles and smart TVs. This is thanks to NordVPN’s SmartPlay feature.

#2 | ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN is another excellent choice if you are looking for a VPN that can bypass the restrictions that Netflix has in place.

netflix vpn

There is a dedicated Netflix page on ExpressVPN, and there are some high-quality servers that can bypass Netflix’s barriers with ease.

In comparison to the likes of NordVPN and Surfshark, ExpressVPN is more expensive, so do keep that in mind.

However, it is certainly one of the most premium VPNs on the market today. The support is outstanding, and you can also access Netflix on any device thanks to the MediaStreamer smart DNS proxy feature.

  • Unlimited bandwidth
  • Excellent speeds
  • No logs

PrivateVPN Cons:

  • Live Chat is not available 24/7

Try PrivateVPN

#3 | PrivateVPN

Another VPN that I have no trouble recommending when it comes to streaming different Netflix libraries is PrivateVPN. PrivateVPN has more than 200 servers, which are situated in 63 different countries.

PrivateVPN

Yes, 200 servers is certainly a lot lower than NordVPN, which is why PrivateVPN is not my first choice. However, you can connect to servers in countries that have some of the best Netflix catalogues, including the UK, Japan, France, Canada, and of course, the United States.

Not only can you unblock Netflix with ease, but PrivateVPN is very fast as well. Plus, the name says it all; security really is a priority with this VPN. You can enjoy a VPN kill switch and government-grade encryption, which will keep your data secure and safe at all times.

I have to also give a shout-out for the customer support as well, with great 24/7 live chat available.

Surfshark Pros:

  • User-friendly
  • Good speeds
  • Unlimited simultaneous connections
  • No-logging policy

Surfshark Cons:

  • Limited P2P servers

Try Surfshark

#4 | Surfshark

I also recommend Surfshark. It is one of the newer players on the VPN market, but this is certainly not a disadvantage. The company has achieved a lot in a small space of time. They now offer over 3,200 servers across 65 different countries, so you get plenty of coverage.

Surfshark is certainly fast, and there are some excellent security features as well. You can use the Smart DNS feature to bypass content restrictions, meaning you can watch Netflix on any device you wish.

One thing that does really set Surfshark apart from the crowd is the fact that it offers unlimited simultaneous connections. This means that your entire family can connect to a VPN via one account, which will save you a good chunk of money.

Try Surfshark

CyberGhost Pros:

  • Good for streaming, including Netflix
  • Stable speeds
  • Multi-platform support
  • Huge network layout

CyberGhost Cons:

  • Limited payment options

Try CyberGhost

#5 | CyberGhost

Last but not least, I highly recommend CyberGhost. CyberGhost is operated from Romania, and it has more than 7,000 servers across 90 different countries at the moment.

It works with a growing number of Netflix catalogues, including the United States, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom.

This is another provider that really has ticked all of the boxes on the security front. You can expect DNS leak protection, an automatic kill switch, and 256-bit military-grade encryption.

With the basic plan, you will be able to enjoy as many as seven simultaneous connections. While this may not be as good as Surfshark, it certainly beats the industry standard.

Do free VPNs work on Netflix?

There are free VPNs available but I personally would not recommend using one when watching any online video content. There are a number of reasons why this is the case, including the following:

  • Free VPNs often aren’t very secure – Free VPNs do not usually come with all of the added security features that you will experience if you go for a paid VPN. A lot of free VPN providers make their money by logging your activity online and selling this data to third parties. This means that although you may be hiding your IP address, you’re sacrificing your privacy in other ways, which can defeat the purpose of using a VPN.
  • Free VPNs often aren’t effective at unblocking restricted content – One of the main reasons why I do not recommend using a free VPN for Netflix is quite simple: they don’t work! I am yet to find a free VPN that is effective at unblocking region-restricted content. In fact, Netflix is quite good at blocking VPNs, which is why you need to go for one of the premium options, as they have the technology to bypass the hurdles Netflix has put in place.

You will use up all of your free data very quickly – The vast majority of free VPNs have monthly data allowances, which are very low. Streaming using a free VPN will eat up your data very, very quickly. In fact, you will find it very difficult to complete one TV show.

Can I use a DNS Proxy to change Netflix region?

Yes, technically you can use a DNS proxy to do this. However, it is not something that I would recommend. The reason for this is that DNS proxies are nowhere near as secure or robust as VPNs are.

DNS, otherwise known as a domain name system, will simply convert your IP address across the web into a readable address that you type into the browser. This means that it is essentially the middleman between your own PC and the site you want to reach.

It will also tell these sites the IP you are using based on where you are located. This is what Netflix will look at when figuring out what country you are in and what content should be displayed.

Despite you being provided with a DNS server by default, you can decide to connect to a different DNS proxy anywhere across the globe. This means that you can watch shows from other countries.

Where a VPN differs is that it is going to change your IP entirely. If that was not enough, the traffic between your computer and the VPN will also be encrypted. This makes sure that no one is able to see the content you are viewing. This makes it the perfect recipe when unlocking Netflix regions and masking your online activities.

So, I hope you can see the main difference here; a DNS proxy will not change your IP address. This is why a VPN is better. If you use a DNS proxy, some companies will be able to determine the actual IP behind the proxy.

Can I change my Netflix billing country?

If you want to alter your billing country on Netflix, you will actually need to cancel your account and then you will need to start a new account in your new country. If you have relocated, you will want to make sure the bill you receive displays the currency that corresponds to your new location. For this to be the case, wait until the end of your current billing period, cancel your account before you are re-billed, and then start up a new account in your new location.

What happens if Netflix notices you are using a VPN?

If Netflix detects that you are using a proxy service or a VPN, you will see an error message, which states that you seem to be using a proxy or an unblocker.

If this happens, don’t panic! It is actually very easy to get around this. All you have to do is follow these steps:

  • Sign up for a VPN that can unblock Netflix – This is the first thing you need to do. I would highly recommend that you go for one of the VPNs I mentioned above.
  • Open the VPN app or the browser extension – Once you have chosen the VPN you are going to use, connect to a server in the location that has the Netflix content you wish to watch. So if, for instance, you want to watch the Canadian version of Netflix, switch to a server in Canada.
  • Clear your browser’s cookies and cache

If this fails, simply try another server – If the three steps mentioned above do not unblock the Netflix content and resolve the error, try using a different server. It should not be too difficult to find a server that does work. However, if you are struggling, I would recommend that you get in touch with the VPN’s support team.

Netflix is currently available in more than 190 countries around the world. Every country has its own catalogue of movies and TV shows. You are not torrenting copyrighted material, and so you are not going to be doing anything illegal. So, you definitely do not need to worry about any sort of civil or criminal lawsuit. Breathe!
